How fashion’s fascination with white trainers came to be

It’s been over a decade since white trainers became a womenswear staple. Yes, we’re marking it by the exact moment Phoebe Philo took her bow on the #oldceline runway, in March 2011, wearing a pair of Adidas Stan Smiths.

A year before, at her debut show for the brand, the designer had chosen the same cigarette pant and roll-neck combo, grounded with a pair of leather loafers instead. While this ensemble was undeniably chic in its androgynous insouciance, there was something about those not-so-box-fresh trainers that seemed almost rebellious. Fashion was all about polish, after all.

Before then, women were shackled to platform stilettos – Louboutin reigned in the early-Noughties – or flimsy ballet flats at best. Womenswear was crying out for a shoe that wasn’t defined by its femininity or sexiness. The lack of comfort and practicality in clothes design is proof of the patriarchy’s influence (the gender pocket gap is based on the assumption women always carry handbags). Trainers weren’t for ladies, trainers were for teenagers, or gym classes.

Which brings us on the next trend that helped create the trainers way of life: athleisure. Alongside an interest in Soul Cycle, green juices, clean eating and healthy hashtags came the rise and rise of sporty clothing. Soon designers were incorporating all of its aesthetic tropes – tricolour webbing, side stripes and technical nylon – into their luxury line-ups. Clare Waight Keller’s spring/summer 2016 collection for Chloé, which featured floor-sweeping floral skirts teamed with track jackets, epitomised this high-low mix.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck showed the glam side of their honeymoon fashion.

The newlyweds dressed up for a night on the town Saturday evening, which included dinner at the restaurant Plénitude and dessert at a Berthillon ice cream shop on the Île Saint-Louis, per People. In the pics, taken outside of the Hôtel de Crillon, the pair look loved up as ever, holding hands as they make their way through the crowd.

For the evening, the “Waiting for Tonight” singer wore a romantic, full-length gown, with a pink-and-cream floral print including shimmering gold detailing. The high-neck gown features puffed shoulders, ballooned sleeves ending with cuffs at the wrist, a bejeweled neck, subtle pleats down the torso, and a modest train.

Her accessories included large flower-shaped diamond earrings and a square gold-and-silver mini-bag. She went minimal with her beauty look, wearing her hair in a ponytail with loose curtain bangs, paired with her favored nude lip.

The Good Will Hunting actor chose a classic gray suit featuring a subtle blue plaid pattern, worn with a light-blue shirt, black shoes, and no tie.

Jennifer Lopez’s honeymoon wardrobe is more affordable than you think

Over the past seven days, the couple has been pictured looking loved up in Paris, where Lopez has been embracing a typically glamorous wardrobe, but that does not mean that she has only been wearing high-end designer pieces. In fact, the musician has been spotted in two affordable summer dresses.

Late last week, the couple enjoyed a romantic boat ride down the Seine, where Lopez looked impossibly chic in a floral, corseted dress. The design is from Los Angeles label Reformation, a brand known for its sustainability credentials, as well as having affordable pieces that are often snapped up by A-listers.

The design in question is Reformation’s Tagliatelle midi, which Lopez wore in the floral Mildred print, but the dress also comes in other prints and in block colours, including white and black.

And that was not Lopez’s only Reformation find of the week. The singer was pictured over the weekend in another perfect sun dress by the label.

Jennifer Lopez paid tribute to Ben Affleck in a big way at their wedding.

The Marry Me actress’s wedding dress was the same white dress she wore on the poster for Jersey Girl, the 2004 movie she starred in with Affleck.

The lacy, sleeveless Alexander McQueen gown in a textured floral jacquard featured a jewel neckline, corseted bodice, and gathered full skirt, and was one of two looks she debuted on her wedding day. In a video of her getting ready for the nuptials, Lopez says, “I’ve had this dress for so many years, and I’ve just been saving it, saving it, saving it, and now I’m wearing it on my wedding day.”

She shared the clip in her newsletter, On the JLo, confirming her and Affleck’s surprise Las Vegas wedding, and fans quickly put the pieces together, noting that the dreamy dress was indeed pulled straight out of her Jersey Girl closet.

Affleck and Lopez filmed the romantic comedy when they were engaged, back in the early 2000s, which means the “Let’s Get Loud” singer saved the piece for more than 20 years.

The two met on the set of Gigli in 2001, and in 2002, the actor proposed. In 2003, they filmed Jersey Girl, and in 2004, they called off their engagement. The two parted ways for nearly two decades, but rekindled their romance last year and tied the knot last Sunday (July 17) in a little chapel in Vegas.

Jennifer Lopez is proving just how versatile a honeymoon wardrobe can be.

The multi-hyphenate, who has lately been enjoying a Parisian excursion with new husband Ben Affleck, was recently spotted making a dramatic change of footwear all within the span of 24 hours.

While getting dinner at Le Flore en l’Île yesterday, J.Lo looked classic in a pair of nude ballet flats adorned with tiny bows. She paired the neutral shoes with a vibrant cobalt blue midi shirt dress with corset detailing from Alexander McQueen. To accessorize, she wore an oversized pair of geometric shades from Otra and carried a canvas jute tote bag from Dior.

Today, the “Let’s Get Loud” singer was seen near the Louvre in a totally different pair of footwear, stepping out in sky-high velvet platforms in a pale plum shade. She styled the heels with a navy sweater bearing a floral design and wide-leg jeans. Accessories included a mint crocodile Hermès Birkin bag, amber-tinted aviator sunglasses, stud earrings, and a canvas belt.

Besides footwear, J.Lo’s honeymoon style has been just as varied in other sartorial departments as well.

Austin Butler has been the talk of the town ever since the world saw his talent as the lead in Baz Luhrmann’s newly-released Elvis film. And now, as he stars in one campaign after the other, his model girlfriend, Kaia Gerber, is coming along for the ride.

In a recent photo shoot for V Magazine, Butler posed in a very Elvis Presley-esque outfit consisting of a black cut-off tank top by Alexander McQueen and matching leather pants with a belt. His hair was slicked back in a loose iteration of the “Hound Dog” singer’s signature ‘do, and he wore two Cartier chain bracelets. In the shot, Butler posed with his back toward the camera, with only part of his face showing and Gerber’s slender arms wrapped around his neck, not revealing her face or body.

Though the publication didn’t tag the model in the photo shared on the V Man Instagram, it’s her signature wrist tattoo (of the words “I know” with a line through them), showing in the shot, which gave her away.
