London’s V&A to Host David Bowie Archive at New East London Location

LONDON — The Victoria and Albert Museum has secured the rights to the archive of David Bowie, the cultural institution revealed Wednesday.

Beginning in 2025, the archive of more than 80,000 items that connect to the artist’s six-decade-long career will be made available to the public through the creation of The David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts at V&A East Storehouse, in Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

More from WWD

The acquisition and creation of the center were made possible thanks to the David Bowie Estate and a donation of 10 million pounds from the Ukrainian-born, American-British businessman Leonard Blavatnik’s family foundation and Warner Music Group.

Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A, said: “David Bowie was one of the greatest musicians and performers of all time.…Bowie’s radical innovations across music, theater, film, fashion and style — from Berlin to Tokyo to London — continue to influence the design and visual culture and inspire creatives from Janelle Monáe to Lady Gaga to Tilda Swinton and Raf Simons.

“Our new collections center, V&A East Storehouse, is the ideal place to put Bowie’s work in dialogue with the V&A’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art, design and performance,” Hunt added.

The archive contains a wide range of items that include handwritten lyrics, letters, sheet music, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs, Bowie’s own instruments, album artwork and awards. It also includes more intimate writings, thought processes and unrealized projects, the majority of which have never been seen by the public.

Fashion highlights among them include the Ziggy Stardust ensembles designed by Freddie Burretti, Kansai Yamamoto’s dazzling creations for the “Aladdin Sane” tour, and the Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and

Jim Shulman: The Paris shop was the go-to place in Pittsfield for ladies’ fashions | History

PARIS01.jpg

The Paris shop was opened in Pittsfield in 1921 by Abraham Schwartz and his stepfather, Isadore Koblinsky, on North Street. It operated 58 years, becoming one of the city’s most popular local apparel shops.

In the 1950s and 1960s downtown Pittsfield had over 100 retail businesses, with the bulk of them apparel stores.

One of these that always puzzled me, at least for its name, was The Paris shop. The store was a small family-run operation that stocked the latest in women’s outfits, dresses, skirts, blouses, sweaters and more.

My mother and sisters were frequent customers for the latest fashions. Many of my classmates got their high school prom gowns there and eventually their wedding dresses as well.

The store was popular and the salespeople were helpful people. One of my friends recently shared when shopping for her wedding gown in the 1970s, she picked out a beautiful dress and the clerk quoted her a very reasonable price.

My friend gave a deposit and when she returned, she learned the wrong price was given. The correct price was nearly four times the amount she was quoted. Despite the error, the store owner made good on the original offer.

This owner was Abraham “Abe” Schwartz, who was not only a nice guy but a hard-working and honest businessman and the uncle of my close friend, Rhoda Pomerantz. Abe was originally from Tarnow, Poland, and came to this country in 1910 at the age of 10.

His mother, Pauline, a young divorcee, wanted to find a better life and place to raise her son. They settled in Chicago where she met and married a skilled tailor named Isadore Koblinsky. He and Pauline had three more children including my friend Rhoda’s mother, Ann.

Meet the Indigenous designers shaking up Milan Fashion Week

Sage Paul has championed Indigenous fashion in Canada for more than a decade. The Toronto-based Dene designer and Indigenous Fashion Arts (IFA) executive’s next mission: breaking down barriers in the global industry. This week, Paul has brought six Indigenous designers from across the country to Milan Fashion Week to showcase their work at the highly regarded trade show WHITE Milano (Feb. 24-27).

“I want our work valued. It’s not a token,” Paul tells The Globe and Mail, while sitting near Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, where the Indigenous Fashion Arts Festival was held last June. WHITE attended last year’s festival and subsequently signed on to feature a different group of Indigenous Canadians each year until 2025. “WHITE Milano values craftsmanship, quality, luxury and one-of-a-kind pieces, which aligns with the work happening in our community,” explains Paul.

This is Paul’s first time taking a delegation abroad and the first international trade show for the designers, who will have access to the 16,000-20,000 visitors at WHITE, including local suppliers, prospective luxury partners and buyers like department stores Saks Fifth Avenue and Hudson’s Bay. For these rising stars and the broader fashion industry, it is a crucial moment in the emergence of Indigenous culture on mainstream platforms.

But many Indigenous designers need support accessing mainstream knowledge and opportunities, Paul explains. At the beginning of her career, Paul admits she felt like a “fish out of water” at standard fashion shows which featured requisite struts, stares and industry seriousness. “For a long time, the fashion industry has been an exclusive space, gate-kept by aristocrats, socialites and financially wealthy people. I am none of those things,” says Paul.

It is vital for organizers such as WHITE to provide additional labour to support designers and educate the industry on how to work with Indigenous people, says Paul.

TikTok can’t get over huge Indiana school with fashion room, auto shop and natatorium

The size and amenities of an Indiana public high school were shown off in viral TikTok videos, and the internet is amazed.

The Carmel High School DECA club took TikTok viewers on a tour of the school, which offers plenty more than a typical high school.

Their gyms and cafeterias — plural — only touch the surface of what the Indianapolis-area school provides students. If the gyms weren’t enough, they also have their own wrestling room and natatorium, an indoor swimming center.

Carmel High School features a spacious auditorium and modern library, along with a cafe, planetarium and its own TV studio and live radio room.

The tour continued, as viewers got a peek into the school’s auto shop, wood shop and one of their many cooking rooms.

Carmel is also one of the wealthiest cities in Indiana, with a median household income of $115,109.

The tour was getting some commentators the itch to re-enroll in school.

“I’m 25 and I wanna go here,” one person said.

“Can I attend Carmel High School as a 20-year-old,” one commenter asked.

Can I Wear Diamond Earrings Daily?

Diamond is considered the hardest gemstone on earth, with unmatched durability and sparkle. Natural diamonds are precious, rare, and expensive. A pair of diamond earrings is an expensive possession; you will never want your jewelry to lose its charm or sparkle and look dull. Like any other piece of jewelry, diamond earrings will accumulate grime and dirt if worn regularly and start appearing dull. Chemicals and ingredients from the day-to-day products you use will create a cast over the diamond stone, which will reduce its sparkle over time. Exposing your diamond earrings to chemicals and chlorinated water will harm their sparkle. If you want to retain its look and shine for several years, avoid wearing your natural diamond earrings daily.

Choose lab-grown diamond earrings for everyday wear.

Lab Grown Diamonds possess the same physical and chemical characteristics as natural diamonds, which is why they look identical to natural diamonds. One of the best attributes of lab-created diamonds is their affordability. Environmentally conscious buyers need not worry about digging a hole in their pocket while buying a pair of lab-grown diamond earrings for themselves or their loved ones. Being affordable and highly durable in nature, lab-grown diamonds are a perfect gemstone for everyday jewelry.

Lab-grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds and sparkling gems made in laboratories. Lab Created Diamond Earrings are made highly durable so that they can withstand daily wear and tear. If you are looking for diamond earrings for everyday wear, then there can be no other better option than lab-grown diamonds, especially for people who are environmentally and socially conscious.

Should I take off my diamond earrings at night?

If you want to wear Lab Diamond Earrings for day-to-day wear, then
