How Dickies Went From Blue-Collar Bastion to High-Style Staple

There aren’t many clothing manufacturers that have contributed as much to their home nation as the American workwear stalwart Dickies, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Founded in Texas by cousins EE “Colonel” Dickie and CN Williamson, the brand was born from humble roots, with the sole “purpose of celebrating and enabling the makers of the world to be better at what they care so deeply about,” says Sarah Crockett, Dickies’ global CMO.

Fast-forward 100 years and Dickies’ mission statement has remained true. Along the way, the brand has consistently innovated and diversified its collection. In the process, it has transcended its workwear roots to become a cult favorite of menswear enthusiasts from Junya Watanabe to A$AP Rocky.

Up until World War II, Dickies primarily serviced blue-collar laborers with garments that could withstand the toils of tough work. The first product that the cousins engineered was the bib overall, constructed from hard-wearing denim and replete with strengthened pockets to safely store away vital tools of the trade. Like many garment manufacturers, World War II forced Dickies hand in supporting the war effort, and the brand was tapped by the American government to make 9 million heavy-duty twill uniforms for the US Armed Forces.

Its most iconic creation of this era, though, is undoubtedly what’s colloquially known as the Eisenhower jacket, named after general (and soon to be president) Dwight D. Eisenhower. Still in production today (albeit a much more contemporary, streamlined version), it’s a cropped utility jacket featuring the

Fashion From Saudi Arabia in the Spotlight

Seriously opulent, luxurious and meticulously crafted fashion, jewelry and accessories by 100 designers from Saudi Arabia are being spotlighted starting Tuesday at the Iron23 event space in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood.

The Saudi designers, many considered emerging brands and selected from a field of 1,500, were challenged to create pieces expressly for the exhibit and that reflect Saudi heritage and culture. The exhibit, called “Saudi 100 Brands Fashion Exhibition,” has been organized by Saudi Arabia’s Fashion Commission. None of the 100 brands has been seen outside Saudi Arabia until now.

More from WWD

The exhibition, which debuted in Riyadh late last year, is split into eight different categories: ready-to-wear, modest, concept, premiere, demi-couture, bridal, handbags and jewelry. While ornate in terms of the heavy use of fabric, embroidery, laser-cuts, color and references from Saudi architecture and landscape, they are modest to the degree they cover the body. On display are long robes or “thobes,” long coats or “abaya” and large scarves for head coverings called “tarha.” But there is a diversity of style, with some streetwear — a hoodie and some shorts are shown — and more fitted and avant garde designs presented.

“This exhibit doesn’t have a commercial angle. It’s meant to give visibility to creativity from a region of the world that has never been exposed to the rest of the world,” Saudi Arabia’s Fashion Commission chief executive officer Burak Cakmak told WWD in an interview at the exhibit. “It’s open to anybody. It’s a free event. You just have to register.”

The exhibit represents “the starting point to show the level of creativity,” said Cakmak, a former dean of the Parsons School of Design. “Each of the brands are working on a wholesale collection. The idea is this fall, we will have wholesale collections available for retail.

Hailey Bieber’s Baby Blue Bikini and Tank Combo Is Peak Cottagecore

“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.”

The love of our lives Hailey Bieber once again slayed her off-duty-model, sporty style, ditching her chic streetwear for something a little more low-key and cute. Hailey gave us yet another summer-approved swimsuit that is sure to turn heads at your next pool party.

Hailey has been giving us life by posting the best swimwear to the ‘gram and TikTok lately, with a peek at her sultry side in a red number, doing her best groovy gal impression in a purple bikini, and keepin’ it classic in the Bahamas with a blue triangle top two-piece. And this new addition to her ever-expanding swimsuit collection is in a style we’ve never seen her wear before.

On July 25, the supermodel showed off an adorable, cottagecore look in an Instagram story and TikTok video where she discussed her latest Rhode skincare restock. Wearing a teeny tank from pal Gigi Hadid’s Frankies Bikinis line (the tank-asher-blue&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Fentertainment%2Fa40731183%2Fhailey-bieber-baby-blue-cottagecore-bikini%2F” data-ylk=”slk:Courtney Lounge Tank in Asher Blue” class=”link “Courtney Lounge Tank in Asher Blue, to be exact), Hailey looked *stunning* covered in the dreamy top. The rosette detail at the neckline drew our attention up to her chest, where we quickly noticed she had a ‘kini hanging out.

Doing some digging, we found out that Hailey is wearing the ‘Bambi’ Double String Top
from Heavy Manners, which she cleverly tied around her neck to create a halter style. As for the matching ‘Bambi’ Bottoms, Mrs. Bieber picked the High Cut Full Bottoms style, pulling them up high on her hips to peek over her pant waist.

Hailey contrasts the cool-toned blues and browns in the swimsuit colorway with a warm-hued

Kaia Gerber Stepped Out in the Nostalgic Sneaker That Celebrities Can’t Stop Wearing

Back in high school, Adidas Samba sneakers — you know, the ones with the famous T-toe and trio of stripes down each side — were reserved just for soccer practice, but now fast-forward to 2022, and the shoes are being worn anywhere, with just about anything.

Take, for instance, supermodel Kaia Gerber, who stepped out in the celebrity-loved sneaker yesterday while elevating her streetwear status in an oversized denim shirt and baggy black trousers. She paired her button-down over a tank top in a coordinating color, and accessorized with two shopping bags, tiny black sunglasses, and sapphire pendant necklace. Meanwhile, on her feet were the iconic Sambas in black with white stripes and gray suede detailing.

Beauty-wise, Kaia kept her look simple with barely-there makeup and loose, shoulder-grazing waves that were complemented by a pair of large headphones.

Kaia isn’t the only celebrity who can’t get enough of the nostalgic Samba sneaker. Earlier this year, Ashley Olsen sported the unfussy shoe while wearing head-to-toe The Row, and just a month later, fellow model Bella Hadid pulled out her pair of Sambas during Milan Fashion Week. She styled hers with chunky white socks teamed with opaque black tights and a brown skirt asymmetric stripes.

‘I’m not going to become boring’

Whether he’s sporting rainbow grillz or performing in an all-white suit with a bleeding heart, J Balvín is all about expressing himself through his clothes.

“Comfy but elegant” is how the Colombian reggaeton star describes his personal style. “What defines me and my style is my personality,” he tells USA TODAY in an interview conducted in Spanish. “It’s all in your attitude” and how you carry yourself.

Balvín is teaming up with Miller Lite for a clothing line inspired by the vibe and culture of the bodega (or corner stores), available now online.

Growing up in Medellín, Colombia, the “In da Getto” singer frequented bodegas as a kid and has fond memories. “The bodegas were my favorite place to be,” he says. “(My friends and I) would sit outside and eat salchichón con limón (a Colombian sausage dish). That was my place.”

Balvín recalls people-watching and daydreaming outside of his local bodega. “A lot of my dreams came out of there,” he adds.

J Balvín sports a varsity jacket from his upcoming collaboration with Miller Lite dubbed BodegaWear.

The streetwear collection, dubbed BodegaWear, is Balvín’s latest fashion collaboration with a major brand. He’s currently working on his second shoe release with the Jordan Brand and has two Guess collaborations under his belt. In 2018, he made his debut as a fashion designer with a collection for the clothing brand Gef France. “Of course,” Balvín wants to work on his own clothing line at some point, “but we have to do it the right way.”

The line includes a white and navy blue varsity jacket, a gray hoodie, slides, socks and a bucket hat, and all pieces are adorned with Balvín’s signature pops of color.

Balvín’s Colombian roots also play a significant role in how he dresses.

Officials: Central Illinois day care worker has monkeypox

Article content

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A central Illinois day care worker has developed monkeypox but it has not spread to others at the center, public health officials said Friday.

Article content

The worker at the unidentified day care in the village of Rantoul was in isolation and doing well, officials said. Screening of children, other workers and their close contacts was underway, The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported.

“We hope there are no kid cases,” said Julie Pryde, director of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District. “But for all we know, the employee could have gotten it from a kid.”

The Rantoul case is Illinois’ first monkeypox case linked to a day care, Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Lauri Sanders said. The monkeypox virus spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact.

The Campaign-Urbana Public Health District learned of the case Thursday. It’s the third monkeypox case so far in Champaign County.

The local agency has enough vaccine to administer to anyone connected to the day care center who wants it, Pryde said. She said the agency also has access to medication for monkeypox, which may cause fever, body aches, chills, fatigue and pimple-like bumps on many parts of the body.

Rantoul is 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Chicago.

Vin Scully through the eyes of four artists

Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, who died Tuesday at the age of 94, is considered the greatest figure in franchise history, even though he never played for the team.

Scully called Dodgers games for 67 seasons and helped the team establish a relationship with the city when it moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles before the 1958 season.

“It was Vinny who introduced the Dodger organization to Southern California, to Los Angeles,” former owner Peter O’Malley said. “It wasn’t the first baseman, or the manager, or the team. There was no one who could have done it better. When you pause to understand the impact that he had then, as well as today, it’s extraordinary.”

We commissioned four artists to commemorate Scully’s career as the legendary voice of the Dodgers. Here are their portraits.

Sophia Chang

@esymai

“Working on baseball cards as an illustrator really opened up the world of baseball to me. I was excited to be commissioned by L.A. Times to work on an illustration of Vin Scully. As a storyteller myself, it is huge honor to be able to capture his likeness and his legacy through my work.”

From Chang’s bio: Sophia Chang hails from the borough of Queens, New York, and in less than a decade managed to champion a name for herself in the art, design and streetwear community worldwide. She has collaborated with Samsung, Nike, Refinery29, Adidas, Apple, Footlocker, HBO, and the NBA to name a few.

Chelique Ross

@che1ique

“For this particular piece really just wanted to create something special and eye-catching for a legendary figure and shine a light on his incredible life’s work.”

Hailey Bieber uses this $45 barrier repair moisturizer to get yummy glazed donut skin

Our team is dedicated to finding and telling you more about the products and deals we love. If you love them too and decide to purchase through the links below, we may receive a commission. Pricing and availability are subject to change.

Hailey Bieber — founder of the already-sold-out Rhode and poster child for the glazed donut look — has let us in on one of her skin care holy grails: The Instant Angel moisturizer by Dieux.

While celebs share countless beauty products that we’re pretty sure they don’t actually use, the photo shared on Bieber’s IGS clearly includes a well-loved tube of the $45 moisturizer. “Instant angel indeed 😍🤍,” wrote Bieber on the post. “Couldn’t love this moisturizer more.”

The lightweight, barrier repair moisturizer is not even part of her Rhode lineup and she still wants to call it out. Clearly, our girl knows that the best way to achieve that glowy, glazed skin is a really freaking good moisturizer — no matter your skin type.

ICYMI, Dieux is the brand behind the In The Know editor-favorite Forever Eye Mask. In fact, Bieber shared with Allure that she consulted Dieux‘s co-founder Charlotte Palermino, licensed esthetician and TikTok’s “skin care fairy godmother,” while developing Rhode. So, yeah, this moisturizer has the good stuff.

How Kanye, Gap, and Chanel Are Dressing Us Down for Dystopia

Photo Illustration by Erin O'Flynn/The Daily Beast/Getty and Balenciaga

Photo Illustration by Erin O’Flynn/The Daily Beast/Getty and Balenciaga

If the world feels terrible right now, one can take small comfort in the cultural history of dystopia being a long one. From George Orwell’s 1984 to cinema franchises like Mad Max, fiction has interrogated what it would be like if we ever hit that point of dystopia or a borderline to present apocalypse. This idea of “the end of life as we know it” has long influenced the cultural zeitgeist, including fashion.

One example is the recent drop of Kanye West’s Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga collection. Business of Fashion credited Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga with bringing a dystopian retail experience to stores. Rather than the traditional well-merchandised, well-sized, particularly laid out approach to visual merchandising Gap takes, the Yeezy collection was available… in trash bags.

How to Vote in a Dystopia

Did this deter many customers from shopping? Not at all. Shoppers waited hours in line to shop to purchase T-shirts and hoodies, many of which are now sold out in most sizes. The shopping area for the collection consisted of limited space with black floors and black walls, and customers recreating the scene of dumpster diving. It was dystopia at its most capitalist.

Despite the Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga collection nearly selling out, some aren’t as happy with this dystopian concept as one might think. Mike Grillo, a customer who recently shopped at Gap after the Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga launch, said, “We need to stop pretending Yeezy Gap is a thing. It’s literally trash bags full of black hoodies flopped in the center of your average gap [products.] Spare us. I also overheard a sales associate saying Yeezy Gap is the same materials Balenciaga uses, and I bet you my retirement fund it’s
